Slip resistance matters just as much. Around a pool the surface is wet most of the day, so we never finish a pool deck with a slick smooth trowel. We use textured finishes that keep their grip when water is sitting on top. A medium broom finish, a knockdown texture, or a cool-deck coating all give you traction without being so rough they tear up bare feet. We match the texture to how you use the space.

Drainage is the part most people never think about, and it is where bad pool decks fail. Water has to run off the deck, away from the pool and away from your house, not pool up in low spots or wash back toward the coping. We grade the slab with the right slope, set the deck height to the pool coping, and plan control joints so the concrete cracks where we want it to instead of randomly across the surface. Central Valley soils are often expansive clay that moves with moisture, so a proper compacted sub-base and moisture control are not optional. They are the reason a deck stays flat instead of heaving.

We pour pool decks at the standard 4 inches thick for foot-traffic areas, with rebar or wire reinforcement based on the soil and the size of the deck. Edges get a clean finish at the coping and around any steps, raised walls, or planters.
