We pour patios at 4 inches thick over a compacted sub-base. That is the standard for foot traffic, patio furniture, grills, and outdoor kitchens. If you plan to drive a vehicle across part of the slab or park an RV next to the house, we step that section up to 6 inches with rebar so it carries the load without cracking. The thickness depends on what the slab has to do, and we size it for your real use, not a one-line guess.

Sub-base prep is where Central Valley patios are won or lost. A lot of our soil is expansive clay that swells when it gets wet and shrinks when it dries. A patio poured straight on top of unprepared clay will move, and a moving slab cracks. We excavate, bring in and compact a proper aggregate base, and set the grade so water runs away from your house and off the slab. Done right, the patio sits still while the dirt around it does whatever it wants.

Finish is where a patio stops being a gray pad and starts being a backyard you want to sit in. Broom finish is the workhorse: clean, slip-resistant, and the lowest cost. Stamped concrete presses a pattern and texture into the wet surface so the slab reads like flagstone, slate, or wood plank at a fraction of the price of the real material. Stained and colored concrete adds tone that holds up to UV, which matters when your patio bakes in full sun half the year. Exposed aggregate gives you a textured, decorative surface that hides wear. Covered patios and pergola pads need a little more planning, and we handle that too. If you are setting posts for a patio cover, an Alumawood structure, or a pergola, we can pour footings and anchor points right into the slab so the cover ties in clean and sits plumb. The same goes for firepit pads, built-in seating, and outdoor kitchen footings. It is far cheaper to set those anchors while the concrete is wet than to drill and bolt into a finished slab later.

Valley heat also shapes how and when we pour. Concrete that sets too fast in 100-degree afternoons can cure weak and crack on the surface. We schedule pours for cooler parts of the day when the heat is on, keep the slab wet during curing, and cut control joints at the right spacing so the concrete cracks where we tell it to instead of wherever it wants. None of that costs you extra. It is just how a patio is supposed to be done.

On price, expect rough Central Valley numbers in the range of $8 to $15 per square foot for standard concrete and $14 to $25 per square foot for stamped or decorative work. A modest 10x12 patio at 120 square feet lands somewhere around $1,000 to $1,800 for a standard finish, more if you go stamped or add a cover. Those are ballpark figures to set expectations.
